You hear it all the time. Save Money and energy by doing this or that, like programming your thermostat or air drying your clothes. Sure, ok awesome, yes great, it all sounds wonderful. But who has time to hang clothes out to dry? Or programming the thermostat sounds easy, but does it ever really work the way you want it to? Our schedules change so much, its too cold when it needs to be warmer or is sweltering in the middle of the night because we put 6am instead of 6pm for the AC to kick on. Sound familiar?
Even if you are a thermostat programming wizard, what if it could be just a little easier? What if that hour you spent working on the thermostat, or any area in your home, could be spent playing with your kids or getting that client call in to land the deal before the weekend? Today, its easier than ever to regulate the temperature of your home or close the garage door from the palm of your hand, no matter where you are in the world. Plus, home automation can truly help you save money on energy bills year after year, helping you to stay in control of your business or home.
Even the government is trying to help, offering tax credits, rebates, and savings for energy efficient homes (regardless of those politics things). According to Energy.gov, “the 115 million residences in America today collectively use an estimated 22.5% of the country’s energy. The typical U.S. family spends at least $2,200 a year on home utility bills.” Yikes! Around our neck of the woods, you can bet there’s an uptick on that average, featuring more people per square mile than the rest of the country and generally larger homes.
Check out a few of tips from Energy.gov on how to save up to 25% on your energy bills and how we can help!
TIP: Install a programmable thermostat to lower utility bills and manage your heating and cooling systems efficiently.
Control your thermostat from anywhere in the world at the tip of your finger. Install Nest or Control4‘s AprilAir to go beyond programming your thermostat from on/off, to maintaining comfortable temps when your home or away. For your store or office, set a scene to conserve heating and cooling energy from the moment you leave at night to the second you walk in the door the next day.
TIP: Turn things off when you are not in the room such as lights, TVs, entertainment systems, and your computer and monitor.
Hey, it happens, we can forget to hit the lights on the way out. What if you could turn them off after you just got to the office? Yes, you can do that! Plus, at the end of the day, when you’re settling in to binge watch your favorite show (ahem… The Flash anyone???), set a lighting scene to dim the family room lights and turn off the rest of the house lights without having to check every room.
TIP: Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use — TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power.
Especially if you are heading out of town this summer or have a shore house you visit on the weekends, make it easy to keep your electronics safe. Not sure what to unplug or what protector is right for you? We can help answer your questions and set you up with an energy saving plan to maximize your savings and home safety.
TIP: You’re out of town and there’s water building up in the basement.
Catch it just before it starts with a text that could save you up to $3,000 and tons of headache. Notifications can easily alert you if there is a leak in the basement as well as any not so awesome things happening in your home or office. The seriously cool Control4 automation system puts your house in the palm of your hand, wherever you are.
TIP: Check to see that windows and doors are closed when heating or cooling your home.
With a quick tap, you can see if your garage door is closed or if the back door is unlocked. Motorized shades help your AC work less by keeping the house cool while the family is out for the day. There are tons of ways you can get your house to become even more of an asset.
